Surfacely vs Otterly
Otterly tracks how your brand appears across AI engines over time. Surfacely goes deeper into your product catalog — auditing schema, variants, and structured data at the PDP level — then hands you a ranked copy-paste fix playbook. Shopify one-click apply from admin is coming soon on Pro and Multi-store.

What each tool is actually built for
Otterly is a brand-monitoring platform. You configure a set of prompts — queries buyers might ask AI engines — and Otterly tracks whether your brand name appears in the response, whether your URLs get cited, and how sentiment shifts over time. It answers the question: is my brand in the room when AI talks about my category?
Surfacely is a GEO audit platform for ecommerce stores. It reads your product catalog the same way an AI crawler does — checking JSON-LD schema, heading hierarchy, structured data at the variant level, llms.txt presence, and meta completeness — then probes ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini with category prompts to see what they actually surface from your store. It answers a more specific question: can AI engines correctly read and recommend my products, and exactly what do I need to change so they can?
That distinction matters. If your goal is longitudinal brand-visibility trend monitoring across a broad marketing team, Otterly is purpose-built for it. If your goal is to understand why your PDPs aren't showing up in AI product recommendations — and to fix that inside Shopify — Otterly does not go deep enough.
Where Otterly wins
Fair comparisons name where the other tool genuinely leads. Otterly does three things better than Surfacely today.
First, engine breadth. Otterly covers six AI surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Copilot and AI Mode are not in the Surfacely probe set. If your brand surfaces heavily in Copilot or if Google AI Mode is a significant traffic source for your category, Otterly is the monitor for that. (Note: Gemini and AI Mode are paid add-ons on all Otterly tiers, not included by default — factor that into the real price.)
Second, longitudinal tracking depth. Otterly is designed for trend analysis — daily prompt checks, weekly citation tracking, a Brand Visibility Index, sentiment over time. Its Looker Studio connector lets agency teams build client-facing dashboards. Surfacely centers on point-in-time audits and weekly monitoring diffs; it does not produce the same category-wide trend charts.
Third, non-ecommerce brand coverage. Otterly tracks any brand, not just Shopify merchants. If you manage a SaaS product, a media brand, or a B2B company alongside ecommerce clients, Otterly handles all of them in a single workspace.
Where Surfacely goes further for Shopify merchants
For a merchant whose revenue depends on AI engines recommending specific products, the monitoring layer Otterly provides is necessary but not sufficient. Knowing that your brand appeared in 23% of category responses this week does not tell you which of your 300 PDPs have invalid schema, which product variants are invisible to AI parsers, or what copy-paste fix lifts your extraction confidence score from 42 to 87.
Surfacely audits at the product level. Every PDP on your store gets a schema validity check, a structured-data depth score, a heading-hierarchy audit, and an AI extraction confidence rating. Phase 10 variant-level analysis catches the common failure mode where a product's base record looks fine but its size or color variants have no structured data at all — the exact gap that causes AI engines to cite a competitor's better-structured product instead.
The audit delivers a ranked fix playbook: each issue is paired with a specific fix, copy-paste ready, and an expected score lift. Shopify one-click apply from admin is coming soon on Pro and Agency tiers.
Otterly has no equivalent. Its recommendations are capped at 3 per month on the Lite tier, and there is no mechanism to push a fix to a connected store. The monitoring-to-fix pipeline simply does not exist in Otterly's product today.
Pricing and access: the practical comparison
Otterly's entry point is $29/mo for the Lite tier — 15 tracked prompts and 3 recommendations per month. That is workable for a single brand watching a handful of queries. Scaling to 100 prompts means the $189/mo Standard tier, and adding Gemini or AI Mode tracking costs more on top. A mid-size agency running multiple clients on full coverage hits the $489/mo Premium tier plus add-ons before long. G2 reviewers specifically flag that prompt-based pricing 'gets expensive at scale.'
Surfacely has a permanent free tier: run an audit without signup; signed-in Free gets 1 audit per month with every problem ranked and fix teasers. The Pro tier is $49/mo ($39/mo annual) and includes 4 audits per month, optional weekly monitoring, saved audit history, and all four probe engines with no add-ons. Multi-store is $149/mo ($119/mo annual) for up to 5 domains. Shopify one-click apply is coming soon. Agency — high-volume audits, bespoke monitoring, white-label PDF export — is arranged via contact sales.
The free anonymous audit is also a structural difference worth naming. Otterly offers a time-limited trial; it does not let a merchant see their AI visibility score without creating an account first. Surfacely lets any store owner run a free audit right now, which means you can see exactly what AI engines see about your store before committing to anything.
